Today there are new softwares and editing tools that allows us to alter images, audio, and videos. And there are those who are using this to create false news stories that appear real. As these editing tools improve, it will become harder for people to know what's real and what's fake.

J.B. Montgomery-M'Govern wrote a column harshly critical of "fake news" in 1898, saying that what characterized "fake news" was sensationalism and "the publication of articles absolutely false, which tend to mislead an ignorant or unsuspecting public.

Alfred Harmsworth started the first modern tabloid newspaper, The Daily Mirror, in London. By 1909 it was selling a million copies per day.
